Decentraland

Decentraland is a virtual reality platform supported by the Ethereum Blockchain. Users can create, experience, and monetize content and applications.

The community permanently owns land in Decentraland, so they have full control over their creations. Users claim ownership of virtual land in a block-based package of packages. Landowners control what content is published in their land share identified by a series of Cartesian coordinates (x, y). Content can range from static 3D scenes to interactive systems like games.

Decentraland Review

History

Decentraland began as a proof-of-concept for assigning ownership of digital real estate to users of a blockchain. This digital property was originally implemented as a pixel in an infinite 2D grid, with each pixel containing metadata that identified the owner and described its color. The experiment was entitled “Stone Age of the Decentralized.”

At the end of 2016, the team developed the Bronze Age, a 3D virtual world divided into plots. The owner of each package could associate it with a hash reference to a file using a modified bitcoin blockchain. From this reference, users exploring the virtual world can use a Distributed Hash Table (DHT) and BitTorrent to download the file containing the contents of the package, which defines the models and textures to display in that location.

The next version of Decentraland, the Iron Age, will create a social experience with an economy driven by the current levels of land ownership and distribution of content. In the Iron Age, developers can create applications through Decentraland, distribute, and monetize them to other users.

The Iron Age will implement peer-to-peer communication, a scripting system, enabling interactive content and a system of faster cryptocurrency payments for worldwide transactions. A communication layer is essential to social experiences by providing positioning, postures, voice chat, and more. Decentraland achieves this with a P2P network. The scripting system is the tool that landowners use to describe the behavior and interactions of 3D objects, sound, and applications on plots. After all, a low-cost payment system is the key to building an economy in the fast-paced environment of a virtual world.

Use cases

Usage

The scripting language Decentraland enables the development of applications, games, gambling, and dynamic 3D scenes. This scripting language is developed for a variety of functions, including creating objects, loading textures, handling physics, coding user interactions, sounds, payments, and external calls.

Content maintenance

Users in Decentraland gather around neighborhoods of common interest. If you are near heavy traffic hubs, users become the content of the owner.

Advertising

Brands can advertise nearby or in high traffic land fleets to promote their products, services, and events. Some neighborhoods may become virtual versions of Times Square in New York City. Besides, brands can position products and create shared experiences to connect with their audience.

Digital collectibles

We expect users to publish, distribute, and collect rare digital assets issued by their creators in the blockchain. As is the case today in other virtual worlds or online forums, these digital assets are traded through the scripting system within that world and supported by the above naming system.

Social

Groups currently gathering in online forums, chat groups, or other centralized multiplayer games could port their communities to Decentraland. Offline communities could also find a place to collect in Decentraland.

Architecture

  • Consensus layer: Track land ownership and its contents.
  • Country Content layer: Download assets through a distributed distribution system.
  • Real-time layer: Enable users’ World Viewer to connect with each other

LAND and MANA Tokens

The benefits of LAND are its proximity to other centers of attention, its ability to host applications, and its identity mechanism. Developers and other content creators need LAND to build on and reach their audiences. Although any unclaimed LAND can be purchased at the same exchange rate (1000 MANA = 1 LAND), LAND packages are distinguishable from each other and can be traded on different markets at different prices.

Decentraland is a distributed platform for a shared virtual world that developers can use to create and monetize applications. The scarcity of land on which applications can be built creates hubs that attract the attention of users, providing revenue to content creators. MANA tokens are used to purchase land, goods, and services around the world. MANA tokens are also used to incentivize content creation and user adoption.
