Operator
Payment21.com is operated by Moving Media GmbH, a privately held FinTech company in Switzerland [5]. Moving Media GmbH is the owner of the Payment21 brand and a licensed financial intermediary headquartered in St. Margrethen, Canton of St. Gallen. [5][6] The company’s Bitcoin cashier system supports straight-through processing (STP) of inbound and outbound payments, which enables merchants to accept cryptographic payments through their websites. Payment21’s application is a bank-agnostic software suite designed to handle digital cash transactions in compliance with applicable anti-money-laundering (AML) standards and legally valid Know-Your-Customer (KYC) practices. [7][8] The service provides immediate clearing of funds with a focus on the cash flow requirements of high-volume businesses that accept thousands of digital currency payments per month. Payment21 also provides cryptocurrency conversion including Bitcoin/EUR exchange services to institutional clients. [9]
History
The business was founded in 2002 and originally specialized in online marketing and e-commerce software development. It was later transformed into a business dedicated to alternative Internet payment methods, offering SaaS billing solutions with a focus on cross-border direct debit. In 2006, the engineering arm of the firm created “Instant eCheck”, a payment collection method based on Check21 Imaging. This solution was aimed at solving the problem of US customers who either did not have access to or chose not to use credit cards to pay for online purchases. [10] Later, the company expanded its services to digital currency.
Regulatory Status
In 2015, Moving Media GmbH became a member of the Association Romande des Intermédiaires Financiers (ARIF) which is a self-regulatory organization (SRO); in 2017, Moving Media GmbH received a financial license as a Directly Subordinated Financial Intermediary (DFSI), making it the first cryptocurrency-related company to be directly supervised by the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA). Partnerships
On March 22nd 2017, Payment21 and ACI Worldwide began a strategic collaboration that enabled payment service providers (PSPs) to offer merchants anti-money laundering (AML)-compliant Bitcoin acceptance via ACI’s e-commerce payment solution. As a result, ACI’s network of more than 130 PSPs, which provides processing services to more than 56,000 merchants, was enabled to accept Bitcoin payments. [33][34] Payment21 also cooperates with the Crypto Valley Association in Zug, Switzerland, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the blockchain and cryptographic technology ecosystems. [17] On 17 July 2017, the business announced its partnership with the EU-based Novis Insurance Company, which enabled the insurer to accept digital currency in all of their markets. [35] On 8 March 2018, Payment21 partnered with the RegTech company Coinfirm to implement their blockchain analysis tools for AML-compliant cryptocurrency transactions.
Patent
A utility patent application for the Dynamic Delivery Authorization for Cryptographic Payments was filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office on May 26th 2016. The patent was described as enabling Bitcoin processors and merchants to control both delivery authorizations and default risk. The innovation mitigates losses that might occur due to incorrect approval for delivery of goods and services. [36]
Awards
Payment21, together with RISE, its IT-advisor and engineering provider, won the 2016 Constantinus Award for Best International Project. It was selected from among 152 projects. [37][38][39][40]
