Robinhood Chain
Robinhood Chain is an Ethereum-compatible layer-2 blockchain developed by Robinhood Markets. It launched publicly on 1 July 2026 and is intended to support financial applications and tokenized assets. The network is built with Arbitrum technology and settles transaction data to Ethereum.[1][2]
History
Robinhood announced a test network in February 2026 and opened the public mainnet on 1 July. The launch formed part of the company's European tokenization strategy and followed its earlier distribution of stock-linked tokens on Arbitrum One. Robinhood described the dedicated network as infrastructure for bringing traditional financial instruments and decentralized applications onto a shared public ledger.[3][4]
Architecture and governance
Robinhood Chain is an Arbitrum-based rollup. It uses Ethereum blobs for data availability, ETH as its gas asset and network identifier 4663. Applications use Ethereum-compatible accounts and smart contracts.[5]
The network permits public use and application deployment, but protocol control is more restricted. Its documentation describes a security council with eight seats: two held by Robinhood and one each held by BitGo, Chainlink Labs, Fireblocks, Offchain Labs, Paxos and Talos. Routine council actions require six signatures and a seven-day timelock, while emergency actions require seven signatures and bypass the timelock. Fraud-proof disputes use Arbitrum's BoLD protocol with a permissioned validator set; the documentation listed Alchemy and Offchain Labs as the two validators in September 2026.[6]
This design separates open application access from the smaller groups able to validate disputed state assertions or execute protocol changes. Ethereum settlement therefore does not by itself make Robinhood Chain's operational governance permissionless.
Stock Tokens
The network's flagship assets are Robinhood Stock Tokens. They are ERC-20 tokens issued by Robinhood Assets (Jersey) Limited as debt securities that track the economic performance of referenced shares or exchange-traded products. They do not give a holder legal or beneficial ownership of the referenced security, including shareholder voting rights. Corporate actions such as dividends and stock splits are reflected through the issuer's terms and an onchain multiplier rather than by transferring shareholder status to token holders.[7][8]
At launch, direct issuance was limited to authorized participants that had completed business verification. Secondary transfers and application access can also be restricted by jurisdiction, trading-session status and the conditions attached to individual assets. Robinhood's documentation consequently distinguishes the tokens from ownership of the underlying shares.[9]
Early use
Early network activity did not closely follow its stated emphasis on tokenized securities. CoinDesk reported that on 30 August 2026 Robinhood Chain processed 5.52 million transactions and about $875 million in decentralized-exchange volume, while approximately 22,600 tokens were created through the Pons launchpad. Applications generated an estimated $2.66 million in 24-hour revenue, about 88% of it from two memecoin tools and Uniswap. The measure referred to application revenue rather than Robinhood's corporate revenue and represented a single-day activity snapshot.[10]
The contrast between the network's tokenized-asset design and its early speculative traffic became a recurring theme in coverage of the launch. It did not change the legal structure of the Stock Tokens or establish that memecoin activity would remain the network's principal use.
Regulation and limitations
Robinhood states that Stock Tokens are offered only where available and are subject to transfer and trading restrictions. Its July 2026 regulatory filing identifies legal, operational, cybersecurity and market risks associated with both the tokens and the chain. Because the instruments are debt securities rather than the referenced shares, users depend on the issuer's contractual obligations, custody arrangements and redemption process in addition to the blockchain's technical operation.[11]
The permissioned validator set and security council permit coordinated upgrades and emergency responses, but they also concentrate operational authority. Smart-contract, bridge, oracle and issuer risks remain distinct from settlement on Ethereum.
