Largest Bitcoin addresses

The largest Bitcoin addresses are the individual Bitcoin addresses with the greatest confirmed on-chain balances at a stated block. Such a list is sometimes called a Bitcoin rich list, but it ranks addresses rather than people, companies, wallets, controllers, or beneficial owners.

The snapshot below was observed at Bitcoin block 964,405 on 28 August 2026. Balances and ranks can change after later blocks. Candidate membership was checked against a public top-address index, and every displayed balance was cross-checked from confirmed funded and spent outputs through a second public explorer.[1][2]

How to interpret the list

A Bitcoin address identifies a spending condition recorded by the network. Its confirmed balance can be reproduced from the set of unspent transaction outputs assigned to it at a specified block. The ranking does not identify one “wallet” or one owner for each row.

Several distinctions matter:

  • Address and wallet: a wallet can generate or control many addresses, while an address is one on-chain identifier.
  • Control and beneficial ownership: the ability to satisfy a spending condition is not the same as legal or economic ownership.
  • Custody: an exchange or other custodian may control an address while holding assets for many customers.
  • Labels: explorer and analytics labels are research leads. A label alone is not proof of current control or ownership.
  • Incoming dust: small unsolicited transfers can change an address's displayed balance without showing activity by its controller.

For these reasons, balances from several addresses should not be combined into a company or person's wealth without separate clustering, custody, and ownership evidence. The related Bitcoin billionaires topic concerns people and entities, not this address-level ranking.

Methodology and limitations

The candidate top 20 was taken from a current public ranking. For each candidate, the confirmed balance was calculated from the explorer's confirmed funded-output total minus its confirmed spent-output total. The rows were then sorted by that cross-checked balance. A separate ranking built from a Bitcoin Core dumptxoutset snapshot was consulted as a comparison, but its visible snapshot was dated 2 August 2026 and was not used as the current table.[5]

This method has limits:

  • the table changes when later confirmed transactions alter balances;
  • an address-level method neither discovers address clusters nor proves entity identity;
  • provider outages, indexing lag, or interpretation differences can create discrepancies that require review;
  • the list excludes no row merely because its controller is unknown;
  • attribution is published only when separately reviewed evidence supports appropriately qualified wording.

The article is reviewed quarterly or after a material top-ten movement, a well-sourced attribution change, a methodology change, or a reported factual error. A review with no material reader-facing change does not require an article edit.
